THANK YOU SO MUCH for your support of the xNHAT!
Here is what your donation helps to support:
Our focus for 2023: Continue the Eastward Extension of the Ammonoosuc Rail Trail from Littleton towards Whitefield. This is an ongoing project that is underway, mile by mile. It will take awhile to achieve, but we are getting there! This year: 2.6 miles from Oxbow Drive to Wing Road.
Our goal is to get cyclists, walkers and runners OFF Route 116 and ON to a scenic rail trail. In 2021-2022 4.4 miles of tracks and ties were removed, the rail bed was ditched, graded, crowned and vibratory packed, ready to ride with a gravel bike, hybrid or mountain bike (there are still some gravelly areas on the trail, but we are doing some raking projects to help!). Enjoy the 4.4 miles of new rail trail in 2023! While this extension project will not get us ALL the way to Whitefield on the rail trail YET, it gives us miles of a beautiful riverside rail trail to enjoy AND reduces the road riding and the hill climbing on Route 116! YAY!!!!
ALL donations received will be TARGETED DIRECTLY for removal of the NEXT 2.6 miles of track and ties removal from Oxbow Drive to Wing Road in Bethlehem. Upon completion in 2023, this project will have added 7 miles of scenic rail trail along the Ammonoosuc River.
The xNHAT is actively participating in this endeavor not only by being an enthusiastic cheerleader alongside the trail, but is so committed to this rail trail project that it is committing $$$$$ to support the project. We provided match funding for the RTP grant that was used for the recently completed track and tie removal project, and we are committing match funding for the NEXT 2.6 miles of extension that will start in this summer.
Our other major focus to to continue to restore and improve the surface of the Ammonoosuc Rail Trail between Bath and Lisbon (see below, September 2022 experiment looking good!).
What we did in 2022: Continue the Eastward Extension of the Ammonoosuc Rail Trail from Littleton towards Whitefield.
We achieved 4.4 miles of new rail trail from Littleton into northern Bethlehem. In 2021-2022 4.4 miles of tracks and ties were removed, the rail bed was ditched, graded, crowned and vibratory packed, ready to ride with a gravel bike, hybrid or mountain bike.
We collaborated with the NH Bureau of Trails, the Ammonoosuc Valley ATV Club and Chief's Quarry in Vermont to restore and resurface a short section of the Ammonoosuc Rail Trail in the Town of Lisbon. The rail trail between Lisbon and Bath has, well, "Issues" and is part of the reason why the Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail has the word "Adventure" included in its name. The surface is potholed, washed out, rutted, washboarded and has big ballast rock in areas to add some spice. In this unique collaborative effort, we helped to fund an experiment: Chief, of Chief's quarry prepared a special mix of hardpacked stone dust that he felt would be solid, smooth and weather resistant, amenable for the motorized AND non-motorized users of the trail. At the beginning of September, a 0.5 mile section of trail was graded, drainage ditches restored and the new surface was applied. It looks great!! It also survived some very heavy rainstorms in September and October. Phew! The ATVs liked it... NO DUST! The walkers and cyclists liked it too!! I believe that the snowmobile riders would notice the smoother surface under the snow. We will see how it looks in the spring after mud season and if all goes well.. the experiment will be a success and we will do more of this in 2023!
In 2022 we kept expanding the North Country Welcomes Bicyclists program, adding more businesses and adding 3 more Dero Fixit stations along the way.
What your donation helped to fund in 2021:
Our focus for 2021 was the implementation of the North Country Welcomes Bicyclists Program and continued rail trail improvements and extensions.
The North Country Welcomes Bicyclists Program purchased and installed permanently fixed bike repair stations and air pumps along the trail from Woodsville to Bethel. We have installed these Dero Fix-it Stations and pumps in the following locations: Woodsville at the overnight parking lot. Lisbon at the train Station. Littleton outside the front door of Thayers Inn on Main Street, Jefferson at the Israel River Campground, Gorham at the Route 2 parking lot next to the Presidential Rail Trail, in Shelburne at the Rattle River Inn and Hostel and in Bethel at the current route endpoint at Davis Park. Additionally, we provided wall hanging work stations or portable "Burrito Style" tool kits and air pumps to the Nootka Lodge in Woodsville, the Littleton Motel on Main Street, the Bowman Inn in Randolph and to 2 shuttle services: Maura at You Service and Dan of Priority Transportation. A grant from the "You Have Our Trust" foundation of the NH Charitable Fund helped support our efforts.
We are working with the NH Bureau of Trails to identify and help fund repairs and improvements to the Ammonoosuc and the Presidential Rail Trails. Donations in 2021 have helped to fund these 2 major projects:
Presidential Rail Trail between Gorham and Pinkham B Road in Randolph: Restoration, ditching, grading and crowning of 4.5 miles of rail trail. this work was needed, since no major restoration work had been done since tracks and ties were removed in the mid 1990's. In sections, the rainwater was running down the middle of the trail, taking the nice cinder and dirt surface away with it. Not anymore!
Ammonoosuc Rail Trail Extension Eastward. It is a goal of the Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail to get cyclstis and walkers OFF of Route 116 between Littleton and Whitefield.
In addition, one more Beaver Deceiver project was funded by the Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail. This was on a spur trail connecting the Presidential Rail Trail to Moose Brook State Park. The trail was being washed out and flooded due to the industrious beavers, and homes downstream were being threatened by the overflow. Instead of trapping the beavers and draining the beautiful pond, a Beaver Deceiver was installed and the beavers, bikers, walkers, pond residents and home residents downstream are all happily coexisting!
The Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail provided match funding to Inland Woods and Trails for a trail project in Bethel that will be a part of the exertion eastward to the Lewiston/Auburn area where the route will connect with the East Coast Greenway. The trail in Bethel is on dirt farm roads in a conservation area located just south off the Mount Abrams Ski area.
Another match funding project was for the Town of Gorham. The town is installing way-finding information to assist cyclists and walkers on the Presidential Rail Trail and the Coos Trails mountain biking system to access amenities in the town via a non motorized trail. A kiosk and the Dero Fix-it station are a part of the match funding. Also, to celebrate the new biking amenities in Gorham, long sleeve t-shirts with the new logo "Gorham Likes Bikes" in a bright visible orange color are being made courtesy of Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail!
Donations received in 2020 helped fund two major projects:
Five “Beaver Deceivers” were donated to the NH Bureau of Trails to be utilized on beaver ponds along the Presidential Rail Trail in Jefferson and Randolph. In the past, the beavers built dams that flooded the ponds to a height that overflowed and washed out sections of the rail trail. The installation of Beaver Deceivers was a Win-Win-Win-Win-Win as the trail was preserved, the beavers are alive, the wetlands were preserved, the NH Bureau of Trails budget was not impacted to repair the damage and trail users enjoyed a dry trail while watching the beavers. Click here if you want to learn more.
The xNHAT also donated money to assist the NH Bureau of Trails fix a tunnel under Route 302 on the Ammonoosuc Rail Trail in the town of Lisbon. The tunnel constantly filled with water, mud or deep sand. Our funds helped to permanently pave the trail in the tunnel and the approaches.
Notable Achievements in 2020
2020 was quite a year. I thought the xNHAT would wallow unused, but I was very wrong.... interest in the xNHAT increased dramatically likely due to COVID pushing us outdoors and looking for adventures. We sent out over 1,300 maps to 28 States and 4 Countries. 310 people contacted us for their celebratory patch after completing the route. Some did it over a few days, some in segments and several people completed the ride in one day!
A lot of the interest was generated after the Trail was featured as the Best Two Wheeled Adventure by NH Magazine, the Cover Story of the August 2020 New Hampshire Magazine, from multiple articles in newspapers from Portsmouth to Concord to Littleton, articles in the NH Rails to Trails Coalition and the National Rails to Trails Magazine. The highlight of the year was to be featured in the NH PBS TV show Windows to the Wild that aired on October 1, 2020.
